ProTrack Scanner failing Scanner Check

Power for the Scanner splits off into two plugs. J3 is the power for the Scanner. J5 only supplies power to the front panel LED. Pin 1 on J3 is power, pin 2 is GND.
The LED supply J5 has them reversed. Not sure who at Huntron thought of that one! Check the internal fuses.
The most important troubleshooting tool is your eyes.

J5 goes to the power on indicator LED.
J3 5 V.D.C. in. Note polarity of Tantalum capacitor for polarity.
J4 Three BNC connectors.

Thank you for the information.
It looks like I had the plugs in the correct order after all.
Internal Fuses! Must be the pico fuses. I will look for them as soon as I get back to the workshop tonight.
Voltages on the ProTrack! still not clear about them. A little bit more information about the voltages if possible please.
ProTrack passes all other tests with flying colors.

What voltages are you referring to? Does the ProTrack fail the Voltage test?

ProTrack is not failing voltages. Jvthorsley was suggesting I should check some voltages on the ProTrack a couple of massages ago.

Have you checked the various supplies on your ProTrack?
There are some isolated supplies for the Scanner.
I found out about these when I accidently connected a 12 V.D.C. PSU to my Scanner.
It blew up a few components as described on this Forum.
The Scanner prefers a 5 V.D.C. PSU."

Just to add more info when I do the manual test with the scanner it seems one of the channels several relays on the scanner does.not even close. the signature stays flat and open.

The power circuit in the Scanner does have DC converter. Check the output for 5Vdc. The relays are all triggered by a 5V signal. You have the correct RJ45 cable from the ProTrack to the Scanner, correct?

Yes I do have the correct RJ45 1-1 through 8-8.

I tested the RJ45 cable with a network mapper/cable tester. My mistake, cable I was using was a crossover. I have a tested and verified good rJ45 between ProTrack & Scanner now.
I can test up to 40 pins with the leads I own at this time.  using the scanner in manual mode without the computer, It seems to be OK. Used it without the computer, in Compare mode, tested over identical ICs, it passed with tolerance set at 8. But, had a few failed pins with tolerance set at 5, even though the signatures looked identical. that is why I figured I got to raise the tolerance. I am not sure if its the right way of doing this either. please correct me if I am wrong.

ProTrack by itself connects to WS no problem.   
but still unable to connect both ProTrack and Scanner to WS. Scanner fails the Loop Calc test. everything passes perfect on ProTrack, but the scanner. 
On the Scanner board measured all relay coils, all except 1 are between 190K, 200K Ohms. the one that is different coil reads 130-140K ohms. it is a different manufacturer's. board's been worked on before.
both F1 and F2 are good.
should I assume the DC to DC converter is OK since it works in manual mode as I explained above?
Should I do a calibration on ProTrack with the Scanner connected? I remember clients that had to calibrate the torque on thier hanpiece motors before use. The mistake they were making was calibrating the torque without any attachment connected to the motor.  motors were weak during use!...

little History on this scanner : could it be possible that I damaged a trace or one of those ICs while testing relay coils.
before replacing the relays, while soldering leads to relays to test the contact resistance on suspect relays and a few to compare...I forgot to turn off the 5V power supply and used the soldering gun on the relays. this seemed to burn out the coils on the relays, they did not respond after that. that's why I had to replace 4 instead of 2.

Calibrating ProTrack while scanner is connected did not help scanner pass the Loop Calc.  :'(

During the Loop Calc I unchecked the Resistance Verify in the scanner test window. the Loop Calc went through. I had to do this a couple of times. now the ProTrack and Scanner are connected to WS. but I wonder what affect does the unchecking of the resistance verify would have on the accuracy of the scans? is this OK?

It appears there is some low level resistance that is causing the failures. Channel B is worse than A. Maybe try a different set of BNC cables between the ProTrack and the Scanner. Use cables that are as short as possible. Also clean the the BNC connectors with some alcohol.
The most important troubleshooting tool is your eyes.

Got it. Thank you. I will do. They are cheap BNC cables from eBay. also looking at the bottom mounting screws on the scanner it looks like scanner been sitting somewhere moist at one point before I got a hold of it

For everyones benefit, some additional information about Loop Calc.

The Loop Calc is a function that will compensate for the capacitance of cables attached to the ProTrack. These "cables" can be test leads, the Scanner (and connected cables) or a Huntron Prober.

The Loop Calc is a separate function from the other Diagnostics and can be executed without having to run the other tests. Right-click the Loop Calc button then left-click the Loop Calc button and the software will run Loop Calc only. Loop Calc will only fail if it cannot compensate for the capacitance at any particular range. The high resistance, high frequency ranges are particularly susceptible to failing if cabling attached to the Tracker is too long.

With a ProTrack and Scanner connected through Workstation, when the Loop Calc is run you should also have your test cables connected but not attached to a PCB or component. Pin 1 is automatically enabled during Loop Calc to ensure that the added capacitance of the cable is correctly compensated. Loop Calc will save a file based on the hardware configuration so you can have several loop compensation files if you have a ProTrack, ProTrack and Scanner, or ProTrack and Huntron Prober.
The most important troubleshooting tool is your eyes.
