READ<\/strong><br>\n<br>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Printed circuit boards (PCBs) were invented over <a href=\"https:\/\/history-computer.com\/ModernComputer\/Basis\/printed_board.html\">80 years ago<\/a>,\nyet they continue to evolve. These developing PCB trends are specifically\ntailored to address demands in the current market. Customers now expect\nelectronic devices to be smaller, less expensive and more adaptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more Read more about Trends...-->\n\n\n\n<p>Here are four developing trends in PCBs to satisfy these\nmarket demands:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><a>Flexible PCBs<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the most highly anticipated consumer products are\nflexible electronic devices such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Rollable TVs<\/li><li>Foldable mobile phones<\/li><li>Wearable fitness monitors<\/li><li>Implantable medical devices<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These devices have driven the massive growth in the market for flexible printed circuit boards. PCBs can flex in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.electronicdesign.com\/industrial-automation\/article\/21805586\/designing-with-ultrathin-flexible-printed-circuit-boards\">three different ways:<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Flexible PCBs use a flexible substrate made from\npolymers like polyimide and polyethylene terephthalate. The entire PCB can\nflex, which can complicate the design since every circuit must be designed to\nwithstand mechanical stresses.<\/li><li>Rigid-flex PCBs use rigid PCBs connected with\nflexible circuits. These are simpler to design than pure flexible PCBs because\nthe rigid sections can protect circuits that can be damaged by flexing.<\/li><li>High Density Interconnect (HDI) flexible PCBs\nuse thinner, more flexible material but provide performance superior to rigid\nPCBs by using microvias and tightly packed components.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><a>Biodegradable PCBs<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>PCBs have also evolved to address safety and environmental\nconcerns. For example, solder containing lead was almost universal before\nmanufacturers began moving away from lead solder in the early 2000s due to <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/LexUriServ\/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:2003:037:0019:0023:EN:PDF\">governmental\nrestrictions<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the amount of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/international-cooperation\/cleaning-electronic-waste-e-waste\">e-waste<\/a>\nproduced every year, manufacturers and environmental groups have raised\nconcerns about the heavy metals and other dangerous chemicals used in PCB\nassemblies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One area of research involves replacing the epoxy resin of\nPCB substrates with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/326668986_Plant-Based_Completely_Biodegradable_Printed_Circuit_Boards\">biodegradable\nmaterial<\/a>. While no commercial products have reached the\nmarket, research projects using plant-based cellulose fibers to manufacture\nPCBs hold some promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><a>3-D printed PCBs<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>3-D printing has become an indispensable tool for both\nprototyping and producing goods. This relatively fast and inexpensive process\nis now being applied to PCB design and manufacturing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, 3-D printed PCBs are part of a broader movement\ntoward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineering.com\/ElectronicsDesign\/ElectronicsDesignArticles\/ArticleID\/19749\/3D-Printing-Complex-Electronic-Components-Creates-New-Manufacturing-Possibilities.aspx\">3-D printed\nelectronics<\/a> in which the substrate and components are\nproduced through a printing process. In conventional PCB assembly, the blank\nsubstrate is produced first. Then the electronic components are mounted onto\nthe substrate. 3-D printed electronics collapse those two steps into a single\nstep by printing the substrate and then printing the electronic components onto\nthe substrate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-heading\"><a>PCBs with integral cameras<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The miniaturization of electronics has been accompanied by\nthe miniaturization of optics. This has allowed cameras, including the lens and\nimaging chip, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcbcart.com\/article\/content\/future-of-pcbs.html\">fit onto a\nPCB<\/a>.
