In repair situations it is often necessary to test the
board without power applied due to uncertainty
as to the nature of the failure. When this condition occurs it is necessary to use nondestructive test
equipment to safely examine component signatures and validate good from bad. Examples of non-destructive test include
power-off diagnostics and optical inspection. Neither test method requires the PCB under test to be powered ON for testing.
This type of testing also lends itself well to troubleshooting circuit boards without the aid of supporting documentation such as schematics.
